''Phoenix'' (also known as the ''Phoenix Album'') is the second full length album by the Los Angeles based neo-psychedelic rock band, the Warlocks. It was released by Birdman Records in 2002;〔(The Warlocks )〕 the band having been signed to this label following the success of their previous album, Rise and Fall. The album received a largely positive critical response, being much compared to bands of the 1960s,〔(The Warlocks: Phoenix | | guardian.co.uk Arts )〕〔(Drowned in Sound - Reviews - Album - The Warlocks )〕 such as The Velvet Underground and The Grateful Dead (unsurprising as both bands had at one point also been known as The Warlocks). Critics also commented on the number of drug references amongst the lyrics,〔〔〔(The Warlocks: Phoenix Album: Pitchfork Record Review )〕 and spiraling "drugged up" guitar solos. The United Kingdom version was released by Mute Records in 2003, and featured a slightly different track listing and ordering, as well as an alternative cover.
